Nucleated Red Blood Cells

HematologyBlood HealthBlood

Nucleated red blood cells are immature red blood cells. They can be listed as the total number, called absolute nRBC, or as a percentage, meaning the number of red blood cells per hundred white blood cells.

Why it matters: A complete blood count is used as part of a routine health exam, to investigate unexplained symptoms such as fever, unintended weight loss, night sweats, bruising, bleeding or fatigue, to monitor an ongoing health condition such as cancer or chronic kidney disease, to monitor how well treatment is working or how a medicine is affecting the body, and to monitor health during pregnancy.
